Soda Bottle Flower Tutorial

As Carol Ann mentioned last week we love recycled materials and will be featuring an item each week and how to transform it. This week’s items is a soda/water bottle. I have been creating these flowers for about 4 years now and have found many uses for them. One example is the chair I designed above for a charity benefit to support local arts programming for the homeless.

What you will need

  • Soda Bottle
  • Scissors
  • Spray-Paint
  • Newspaper

A note about bottles:

· Thin bottles such soda bottles and water bottles work best for this project. Thicker bottles like that which Gatorade and Vitamin Water come in are to thick and not suitable for cutting with scissors.

· Each bottle has a unique shape and texture that will lend itself to differing flower designs have fun and experimenting with different bottles to get various designs.

1. Take the cap off your soda bottle and clean the bottle by swishing some water around inside. Be sure to keep the cap!

2.
Remove as much of the soda bottle label as possible by slipping a pair of scissors under the label and pulling away the remaining sections.

3. Squishing the bottle in the center with your hand, use scissors cut a slit in the side of the bottle half way down from the neck.

4. Slip the scissors into the incision and cut around the circumference of the bottle.

5. Decide what length you would like your petals to be.

6. Then shorten the distance between the end of the bottle and the neck by making a new cut around the circumference of the bottle.

7.
Determine the number of petals you would like your bottle to have.

8.You can have as few as 4 or 5 or as many as 15-16. Make incisions from the end of the bottle to the neck.

9. Once you have all your petals divided shape each petal by rounding corners adding points or cutting them in whatever shape your heart desires.

10.
Pull back each petal flipping them inside out and creasing each at the base of the petal.

11. a Now that you have your flower created you ready to begin decorating. Spread your newspaper out on the ground outside placing the flowers on top. Make sure that you are protected from the wind so the flowers don’t blow over and your paint doesn’t drift away before it reaches the flowers.

11. b Holding your can of spray paint about 6-8 inches above the flowers begin spraying them by moving the can back and forth over the flowers until they are the shade you like.

12. Once spray painted let the flowers dry for about 30 minutes before touching the paint. You can use multiple colors of spray paint for a multi-color effect or add embellishments with markers or acrylic paint. Here are a few of my designs.

If you would like to attach the flowers to items as I did with the chair. Drill a hole in the cap of the soda bottle then thumbtack, screw or nail it to your wall, door, shed, or art project. Then screw on the flower!

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. Let me know your thoughts and be on the look out for next weeks transformation.

Trying to keep cool

Spent Sunday reorganizing all of my supplies so that they’re more accessible, and getting reacquainted with Silas (my sewing machine) after almost a month of not using him. Decided to make table centerpiece because I was inspired by craft leftovers.

I tried to use at least one scrap of each of the green fabrics I have, because I know someday I want to have a kitchen that’s all different shades of green together. I think it looks clean and fun, and I’m surprised at how all of those really different fabrics look so nice all together.

It’s been SO hot lately, and since I don’t have AC at my apartment, I needed a portable project that I can take to cooler places. I made these fabric covered clips, and I’ve been wearing them to work. I love how they look in my vintage fabric scraps! The photo is not awesome, but again, I was only home with my camera for a fleeting moment before I retreated once again to a cooler spot. I’m surprised at myself by saying this, but…I’ve been longing for WINTER!
In two weeks, I’m headed to visit Lisa in the Netherlands. Hoping to find some cute fabric over there…I’ll be sure to leave some space in my suitcase!

Clutch clutches

Looking back, I had an incredibly crafty week this week. And yet, I don’t feel crafted out at all!

First up, a fabric necklace. I’ve been meaning to try this out for a while. I found a tutorial from Martha. It was super quick and easy. I’m not much for necklaces, but I think this is really fun.
I got a surprise package from Mom this week with some personalized tags inside! Now everyone I’ve given gifts to has to bring them back so I can add a tag to them! I stole the apron I made for Christina back before she got back from Europe yesterday. Look how cute!

We went to Merideth and Jesse’s house for a 4th of July BBQ. I happened to have some very patriotic fabric laying around, and had no particular plan for it. So I made her a cute string of flags to hang up by her pool.

Loved having an excuse to break out my new ruffle tube top. And of course, I had to craft a dessert to match! (My stellar assistant shown here.)

MMmmmmmMmm cupcakes!

The ruffle top inspired me to explore my box of t-shirts a bit more. I made this sling bag from a cute pink polka-dot tee. Not sure if I’ll actually use it, but I think it’s cute. Anyone want it?

On Wednesday night I went to Kreatelier on Hope Street for a “Fancy Clutch” sewing workshop. This was one of the things I promised myself I would do with the proceeds from my booth at the art festival. The class was taught by Lisa from Pink Lemonade Boutique, and it was super fun. Choosing the fabric might have been the hardest part, but I settled on this green & brown combo to match the new brown dress I bought. Kate at work told me it was a “clutch clutch.”
Lisa had other stuff for sale in the Kreatelier shop, including wristlets with darling little pleats. I asked Lisa about how she goes about making them, and she gave me some tips. I fiddled around today and….

Tah Dah!! I totally created a pleated wristlet! I didn’t have any interfacing, so I used an old pair of wool pants to give the bag some heft. I’m so glad that I got a chance to use these lovely vintage fabrics on such a summery, delightful project!
Here’s to another crafty week….happy crafting!

Happy Birthday, Britni!

Today is my soon-to-be-sister-in-law’s birthday! Britni, I’ll send this to you in the mail as soon as I can! Something for your new apartment…
Inspired by the reaction to our use of recycled materials last weekend, I’m getting more and more into reusing and repurposing things. I made this framed piece from a my junk mail – but I think it looks colorful and classy. Check out the tutorial at Apartment Therapy.

This afternoon I’m headed to Ian’s friend’s wedding here in Providence. I made this cute apron for the bride…I hear she loves to bake.

Also reversible. It’s all about the details. Of course I had to throw in something for the groom. Ian insisted that he would never wear an apron (even a super manly one). So I got him a book about grilling.

And I still have Kristin’s apron waiting to be picked up. I’ve decided to package all of my things like this – brown paper wrapped in a piece of selvage. And a business card (from the few I have left!). I think it’s very clean looking.
Looking forward to resting this weekend, but I just know I’ll end up sewing something. Happy crafting!

Happy Mother’s Day!

I sent Mom a package this week that included…

A fabric flower bowl from this tutorial.

And a fabric flower corsage from this tutorial. It’s a lily with leaves and a carnation. It’s thanks to my mom and my grandmothers that I’m so crafty!

Then today I got to work on lots of gifts for upcoming special events! Brittany’s graduation and birthday gifts are complete!

In addition to the crochet needle case from last week, I made her a wallet (you know, to hold all of that money that recent college grads earn!). I improved upon the pattern so that the upper pocket goes all the way across the wallet and can hold money. I’m a little jealous…this wallet is way better than the one I’m carrying around!

And a house-warming gift for Merideth! I hope her husband Jesse won’t mind that I didn’t make him a matching one…I’m thinking that he’ll be happy enough to benefit from all the cooking and baking this apron will hopefully inspire her to do! I love how tall this one is (it’s a full fat quarter). And this is my first time using ric-rac. So cute! This will be hard to let go of… Maybe I’ll make myself a matching one…

Made one other thing that I can’t post up yet…have to wait for that holiday to arrive!

BUT the BIG NEWS is that Adrienne and I were accepted into the Providence Art Festival! We had a crafternoon this weekend to get crackin’ on inventory and start trying to figure out all of the things that we need to do before the sale on June 13th! (So soon!) There are TONS of online resources about this kind of thing…it’s a bit overwhelming. But so exciting – it will be a great learning experience and lots of fun. I’m sure I’ll be posting lots about this in the weeks to come. Until then, I’ll be crafting my little heart out getting ready!

(I must be feeling spunky today – there are a million exclamation points in this post!)

Happy crafting!

Delayed…

I’ve been fighting with my blog for the past two nights, but it finally let me upload some photos this morning. So, a quick post before I jet to work!

Easter baskets for E, Steffi, M&D, and I&L.

I was on such a sugar high after making these (some sampling, of course) that I had to go for a walk at 10pm for an hour!

Finally took down the St. Patrick’s Day decorations after my friend Mike in Australia gave me hell for it over skype. Things are looking a bit more springy around here, with some fabric flowers

…a garland made from all of the Tazo tea tabs that I’ve been saving up since Christmas, some pastel thread, and some of E’s crazy albums. My favorite is “April in Paris.”

Then I decided to make an apron for my new friend Joanna. But I didn’t have enough fabric! Luckily, Adrienne was here for crafternoon, and pointed out that I could transform this old skirt that doesn’t fit.

Ta da!!! So pretty, so springy! I gave it to Joanna yesterday and she said it just made her want to bake brownies.

And then my first quilt. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. In fact, it was quite easy. Got some pointers here. These are squares of all of my favorite fabrics. It’s going to hang at the head of my bed like a head board.

What a big week! Off to work!

Happy crafting!

Feelin’ Green

Busy week this week! Lots of prep for my first overnight with the girl scouts at the Museum, and then a lot of sleeping to catch up on all the zzzzzz’s that didn’t happen on Friday night. Found some time today to do some catch-up crafting, a little prep for our St. Patrick’s Day bash, and a new project from the book Elliott gave me for Christmas.

Repaired a pair of earrings for Liz at work, and it reminded me that I haven’t worked these wallpaper earrings in a year. Yet they’ve all been hanging on my wall all this time…

Pulled out some green albums (including “A child’s introduction to sex” – amazing!) and other green things to decorate the mantle.

And some of my other favorite green things – thread, fabric scraps, yarn, ribbon, and tea bags to decorate the kitchen table.

I’m definitely feeling ready for a party.

Adrienne and I crafternooned today, and I made this cute sewing basket. Once again, loving this fabric! Soon it will be time to go back to VT so I can get some more fat quarters. Oh, and visit M & D.

Hoping for a relaxing week this week – more time for sewing! Happy crafting!
